Zdzisław Mach

Professor in sociology and anthropology at the Jagiellonian University. Founder and head of the Institute for European Studies at the Jagiellonian University, and one of the main authors of the European Studies curriculum in Poland.

He has broad international teaching experience from Europe and America. Previous teaching and research appointments include Université Montpellier IIII Paul Valéry, University of Exeter, University College Dublin, University of Chicago, Oxford University, University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study, the American Council of Learned Societies, University of Edinburgh and St. John's College, Oxford.

His research interests cover identity issues such as nationalism, minorities and ethnicity, the development of European citizenship, migration and the reconstruction of identity, the ethnic origin of a nation and construction of identities as well as the development of the idea of Europe.

Paweł Laidler, Dean of the Faculty of International and Political Studies

Dean of the Faculty of International and Political Studies

Prof. dr hab. Paweł Laidler (PhD) – a lawyer and political scientist, associate professor of American studies at the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He is mainly interested in the clash of law and politics in the United States, with a special focus on the status of American democracy and the role of judiciary. He currently conducts research on the problem of money in political electoral process, from the perspective of both federal and state governments.

He us the author of five books, on the political role of U.S. attorney general ("Prokurator Generalny USA: konflikt kompetencji", Jagiellonian University Press, 2004); "Basic Documents in U.S. Constitutional Law: Separation of Powers", JUP, 2005; the guide to U.S. constitution ("Konstytucja USA: przewodnik", JUP, 2007); "Basic Documents in U.S. Constitutional Law: Rights and Liberties", JUP, 2009; and about political and legal aspects of functioning of the U.S. Supreme Court ("Sąd Najwyższy Stanów Zjednoczonych Ameryki: od prawa do polityki", JUP, 2011). He also wrote almost fifty articles on U.S. legal system, U.S. politics and social relations (both in Polish and English).

He teaches courses on U.S. legal system, comparative legal systems, U.S. criminal procedure, law and politics in the United States, public relations, international public law, as well as B.A. and M.A. seminars. He received several awards for didactics at the Jagiellonian University, including three Rector awards, and a Jagiellonian University Students' Prize for the highest grades in student questionnaire in the year 2013.

A grantee of Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund (study visit in Catholic University of America, D.C., 2001), JFK Institute Library Grant (Berlin, 2011), and Science Environment Technology grant from the European Union (participation in Winter Scholl of Methods at University of Vienna, ECPR, 2014). Recently, he, and his cooperative, dr Maciej Turek, received a research grant from National Scientific Center for a project on current status of democracy from the perspective of the evolution of American campaign finance laws (NCN, 2014). Since 2014, he participated in more than 40 international and Polish academic conferences and seminars, additionally organizing or co-organizing five conferences at the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora. He participated in four Erasmus Staff Teaching Mobility programs, visiting University of Leipzig, University of Rome, University of Catania and University of Florence.

Apart from scientific and didactic achievements, Pawel Laidler provides written and oral commentaries to the media on current political and legal topics, with a special focus on the United States of America.

Dorota Pietrzyk-Reeves,  Vice-Dean for Research and International Cooperation

Dorota Pietrzyk-Reeves, Associate Professor of Political Science and Political Philosophy at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations, Vice-Dean for Research and International Cooperation of the Faculty of International and Political Studies. Her main areas of research and teaching include political philosophy, democratic theory, democracy and civil society in Central and Eastern Europe, ethics of international relations, multiculturalism, soft power and political education. She is currently head of two international research projects: The Conditions of Civil Society in Central and Eastern Europe Thirty Years After: A Comparative Perspective; and Recovering Europe's Parliamentary Culture, ca. 1500-1700: A New Comparative Approach to Political Assemblies. She has published widely in such journals as Politics, Acta Politica, Education, Citizenship and Social Justice, Cambridge Review of International Affairs, East European Politics and Societies, Communist and Post-Communist Studies, and PS-Political Science and Politics. Her recent books include People Power: Civic Activism in Hard Times in Central and Eastern Europe (co-edited with Patrice McMahon and Paula Pickering, forthcoming in 2024), Polish Republican Discourse in the Sixteenth Century (Cambridge University Press, 2020) and Civil Society, Democracy and Democratization (Peter Lang, 2016).

Jerzy Bayer

Position: Jagiellonian University Professor, Institute of Middle and Far East

Research interests:

International relations in East Asia; China’s domestic policies and problems, power structure, nationalities; The issue of Tibet; South East Asian countries: domestic policies, regional relationships, relations with China; North Korean armed forces and situation on the Korean Peninsula.

Marta Golonka

Dr Marta Golonka holds a Phd in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics, where she also obtained her MSc. Having travelled and lived abroad in various countries, she received her preliminary education and BA from the University of Texas in Austin, in Russian and East European Studies.

Dr Golonka specialises in the area of international economic relations. She has lectured at the LSE, Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. She teaches courses related to international relations, finance, trade, development, comparative political economy and globalisation.

She has worked for the European Parliament and the European Commission in Brussels.

Marcin Grabowski, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations of the Jagiellonian University of Krakow.

Marcin has graduated in International Relations from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. He studied at Columbia University in the City of New York (School of International and Public Affairs), George Washington University in Washington (Sigur Center for Asian Studies), and University of California, San Diego, where he completed the Global Leadership Institute program. He has prepared a Ph.D. dissertation The United States and the Economic Integration of the Pacific Rim since 1989, with a Special Focus on APEC and ASEAN, awarded in Jozef Kukulka Contest for the Best Dissertation Dealing with the Theory of International Relations.

Marcin's research interests focus on the Asia-Pacific Rim, especially institutional arrangements of the region (APEC, ASEM, ASEAN, EAS, ARF, SAARC), American and Chinese foreign policies, theories of IR and the International Economics. He conducted his research i.a. at Institute of Southeast Asian Studies in Singapore, Korea Institute for International Economic Policy in Seoul, Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies of the Waseda University in Tokyo, East Asian Bureau of Economic Research (EABER) in Canberra or Nordic Institute of Asian Studies in Copenhagen. He served as an advisor to the Polish Minister of Higher Education and Science – in the framework of the Young Scholars' Council (2011-2013).

At the IRAS program, Marcin Grabowski teaches International Relations of the 20th Century, U.S. Foreign Policy after the End of Cold War, International Relations in the Americas (together with Marcin Gabryś), Regional Integration and Economic Relations in the Asia-Pacific (together with Ewa Trojnar) and International Relations in the Asia-Pacific (together with Ewa Trojnar).

Adam Wacław Jelonek

Position: Prof. Dr. Adam Wacław Jelonek is a Professor and Head of the Institute of Middle and Far East at Jagiellonian University. Rector's Representative for Internalization. Chair for East and South East Asia at the Institute of the Middle and Far East, Jagiellonian University.

About: He specializes in Political Science, Sociology, and Business Administration. His research interests include political anthropology, theories of social development, political systems of East Asia. He is a graduate of the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science at the University of Warsaw. MBA at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. Ph.D. in humanities from the Institute of Sociology of the Warsaw University. Habilitation at the Faculty of Philosophy and Sociology in 2005. Between 2010 and 2014 Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland to Malaysia, Brunei and the Philippines. Later advisor for the armament affairs in the Ministry of National Defense. He was also an underground activist of Federation of Fighting Youth and Confederation of Independent Poland.

Position:

Assistant Professor at the Department of Political Studies, Cracow University of Economics.

Research interests:

Russia’s foreign policy, Russia’s economic relations with foreign partners, Polish-Russian relations, Russian political system as well as the decision-making process and geo-economics in the Russian Federation. His research interests also lie at the intersection of International Political Economy and Security.

● 2005-2009 - PhD studies in the Institute of Political Science of the Pedagogical University in Krakow, subject of research: Russian politics towards Poland during the presidency of Vladimir Putin (2000-2008),

  • Author of numerous publications in the field of Russia’s foreign policy, as well as a frequent speaker at international conferences and events (especially in Russia).
  • He worked for Russian Foundation Russkiy Mir and collaborated with numerous think-tanks like Institute for Eastern Studies in Warsaw (collaborator: Summer Forum’s School 2008 , Economic Forum in Krynica 2008, Economic Forum 2009).
  • Rafał has undertaken research and scholarly activities across some eastern countries like Russia and post-soviet space.
  • His previous research experience includes working with the:
    •  ‘The Geo-strategic Choice of Russia at the Beginning of 21st Century’ project within the Institute of Russia and Eastern Europe of the Jagiellonian University,

He is a four-times recipient of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education award and has received the Jagiellonian University Rector's award a number of times. He has been decorated with the Cavalier's Cross - the Order of Rebirth of Poland and the Medal of the National Education Commission.

Wojciech Michnik

Position: Dr Wojciech Michnik (Ph.D.) - Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations, Jagiellonian University in Krakow and Contributing editor for New Eastern Europe. Trained and educated in international security, strategic studies and cultural studies, Wojciech holds M.A. and Ph.D. from Jagiellonian University. He is experienced in research and teaching in Europe, Middle East and the United States. Wojciech is a former Eisenhower Fellow at NATO Defense College; Fulbright Scholar at Columbia University, lecturer at the American University in the Emirates in Dubai; and advisor at the Poland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His research interests include NATO-Russia relations; transatlantic security; great power rivalry in the Middle East; contemporary conflicts; and Russia’s foreign policy.

Dr Grzegorz Pożarlik is a lecturer in the Institute for European Studies of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków and holds a PhD in Humanities from the Faculty of Philosophy at the Jagiellonian University. His doctoral thesis analysed the Polish raison d'état in the context of the European integration processes.

He has also done research in the fields of international security in the Post-Cold War era, democracy and legitimacy in the EU, European citizenship and European identity, civil society and public sphere. His recent publications focus on the problem of global asymmetry as a background for the emergence of the Post-Westphalian paradigm in the international relations with special emphasis on the role of the EU as a global normative power.

Dr Grzegorz Pożarlik co-ordinates Eramus Mundus mobiity programmes as well as other joint European Studies programmes within the Institute of European Studies.

Garry Robson

Garry Robson was awarded a PhD (Sociology) by Goldsmiths College , University of London in 1998. Following this he taught and researched for four years in England ( Goldsmiths College, University of East London) before relocating to Poland in 2002. He has since teaching sociology and cultural studies in Polish universities, mostly in Krakow. He is currently Professor at the Institute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora, UJ, teaching MA courses on Globalisation, Cultural Studies, Research Methods, The Sociology of Sport and African-American Expressive Culture.

Natasza Styczyńska holds a PhD in Political Science from the Jagiellonian University. Her doctoral thesis tackled the issues of European discourse of polish political parties and Euroscepticism. She obtained MA degrees in Political Sciences (from Pedagogical University of Krakow) and in European Studies (from Jagiellonian University). Since 2006 she works at the Institute of European Studies, Jagiellonian University in Kraków.

She is a researcher in the project entitled "Democratic control and legitimisation in European Foreign Policy. The case study of EU Enlargement Policy and European Neighbourhood Policy" that is funded by the National Research Centre, Poland. Dr Styczyńska is also involved in research and training provided through EUROMEC European Identity, Culture, Exchanges and Multilingualism Network ( Jean Monnet Erasmus+ Programme). In 2008-2011 she has been a researcher in the RECON (Reconstituting Democracy in Europe) Integrated Project supported by the European Commission's Sixth Framework Programme.

Her academic interests include transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe, party politics, nationalism, populism and euroscepticism in the CEE region and the Balkans, as well as identity issues on the borderlands and Austro-Hungarian heritage in Central and Southern Europe.

Outside of the academic world she is big fan of ski-mountaineering, Balkan region and cultural oriented travels, about which she has been writing to a number of travel magazines and blogs.

Professor of political philosophy at the Institute of Political Science and International Relations

A graduate of philosophy and law (PhD, habilitation), professor of humanities, qualified judge, an eminent scholar and teacher, editor-in-chief of "Politeja", a well-established academic journal of the Faculty of International and Political Studies, a member of Academia Europaea (elected in 2014). Patrick Vaughan

Professor of Trans-Atlantic Studies at the Jagiellonian University.

Teaches: History of USA, Canada and Latin America

He specializes on Cold War history and America's evolving global role in the early 21st century. He came to Poland on a Fulbright Scholarship in 2000. He has subsequently received generous support from the Kosciuszko Foundation and the George Kennan Center/Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. In 2003 his work on Zbigniew Brzeziński was awarded by the Polish Institute for Arts and Sciences and the Polish Embassy in Washington DC as the top PhD regarding Poland. In 2011 his strategic biography of Zbigniew Brzeziński was nominated for Nagroda Historyczna im. Kazimierza Moczarskiego as one of the superior works in Polish contemporary history. He also teaches classes on Soviet/East European literature, the role of petroleum in the geopolitical contest in Eurasia, and Science Fiction as political and social metaphor.

Adam Walaszek

Jolanta Zombirt

Professor Jolanta Zombirt

Position:

Professor at Institute of European Studies, Jagiellonian University

About:

Prof. Jolanta Zombirt studied economics at the University of Economics in Krakow (1973) and oriental studies (Arabic) at the Jagiellonian University (1976) and completed her PhD at Warsaw School of Economics (1999) and her habilitation at the same institution in 2003.

Between 1994 and 2000 she worked as an adviser in commercial banks, and from 2000 to 2007 as a chief specialist at the National Bank of Poland. From 1996 to 2003 she was an assistant at Warsaw School of Economics , and since 2004 she has been an associate professor at the Jagiellonian University. Her research interests include banking, financial engineering and economic integration.
